What are the schools like in Brixton?

For anyone buying or renting in Brixton.

Brixton's schools are a strong point. The local primaries post solid maths results. Most of the borough's graded schools are rated good or better. A primary school is about five minutes' walk from the average front door. The secondary results are more modest than the primary ones, and that makes them the part a family should look at most carefully.

There are nine mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 105. Reay Primary, Van Gogh Primary and St John's Angell Town Church of England Primary are among them. The last takes its name from Angell Town, laid out in the 1850s on the east side of Brixton Road. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 puts the nearest primary about five minutes' walk from the average home. In Brixton the school run is shorter than the queue for a coffee on the way.

The area has two mainstream state secondaries, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 44 at GCSE, weighted by the number of pupils. Platanos College and Saint Gabriel's College are the local names, and the same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 11 minutes' walk away. Two schools make a small pool, and one strong or weak year group can move that average. Many Brixton families also look further afield, since the Victoria line and the buses make a longer journey to a secondary in the next borough straightforward.

Ofsted has given 35 of the 41 graded schools in Lambeth a good or outstanding rating, so about five in every six. Eleven are outstanding, five require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 32 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, and that tells a parent nothing either way about them. Lambeth's record is the backdrop. The school a Brixton child actually gets is decided by the council's published admissions rules, and a house near Reay or Van Gogh does not come with a place at either. Look up the distance at which each school made its last offer, which Lambeth publishes, before assuming the walk on the map is the walk your child will take. "Walking distance to outstanding schools" in a property listing is a description of geography and promises nothing about admission.

Lansdowne School also serves the area as a special school, part of the provision for children whose needs mainstream classrooms can't meet.

Brixton's schools are one of its real strengths. The primaries carry most of that, and families will want to look harder at the move to secondary.
