The schools serving Bloomsbury are very good, and every one with a published grade is rated good or better. Half of them are outstanding. None needs improving. A primary school is a short walk from most front doors. The district is far better known for degrees than for times tables, yet the schools at the bottom of the education ladder hold up just as well as the ones at the top.
Camden has 25 schools with a published Ofsted grade, and all 25 are rated good or better. That covers the whole borough, so the figure describes Bloomsbury's options rather than Bloomsbury alone. Thirteen are outstanding, 12 are good, and none is rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 26 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, which means they have not been inspected under the current framework. It says nothing either way about how good they are.
The two primary schools nearest the middle of the district are Argyle Primary School and St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School. Places at both are allocated under published admissions rules, Camden's for community schools and the school's own for the church school, and a church school's criteria can bring faith into the application as well as distance, so a flat round the corner does not secure a seat. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, which date from 2019, put the nearest primary about a 5-minute walk away on average. Ask Camden for the furthest distance offered at your preferred school in the last admissions round, because in a district this dense that distance can be a lot shorter than it looks on the map.
Secondary school takes a little longer. The same 2019 figures put the nearest one about a 16-minute walk or about a 15-minute journey on public transport. The independent sector is also on hand: Jeannine Manuel School is in the area, and so is Guildhouse School. In a district where most of the students are adults, the teenage school run is the least crowded part of the morning.
The district's best-known places of learning are University College London, Birkbeck, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the University of London, and none of them take five-year-olds. Families are a small share of households. At the 2021 Census about 8% of households were couples with dependent children and about 9% were lone-parent families. Competition for primary places comes mostly from across the borough. Bloomsbury's own families are outnumbered in the queue by everyone else's, which is the price of living next to schools this well regarded.
Schooling is one of Bloomsbury's real strengths. Children get schools that inspect well a short walk away, and they get to grow up surrounded by people who ended up doing a PhD anyway.
