Is Bexley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bexley.

Bexley is one of the safer places in its borough by a wide margin. Crime runs well under the borough average. Unemployment barely registers. Overcrowding is close to absent. The crime that does turn up here mostly wants things, and it has a strong preference for the car.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 1,716 crimes in Bexley in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 47 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly two-fifths below the average for the London Borough of Bexley over the same twelve months. A full year of figures means one bad weekend cannot rewrite the picture.

Set side by side, the gap is plain. Bexley recorded about 47 crimes per 1,000 residents, while the London Borough of Bexley as a whole recorded about 81. The village carries the borough's name and a little over half its crime rate, which is the kind of inheritance most places would take.

The setting is suburban and settled. Homes here run at about 4,170 people per square kilometre on average, unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. It is a place of houses with drives and front gardens, and the streets look like what they are.

The mix leans towards property over people. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, make up about 33% of recorded crime in Bexley against about 35% across England and Wales, so slightly under the national share. Anti-social behaviour is about 20% here against 16% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%. The sharper differences are vehicle crime, at 11% of the total against 5% nationally, and burglary, at about 6% against 4%. Public order offences run at about 6% against 7%. In Bexley the thing most likely to be stolen has a number plate. The police.uk street-level map shows where recorded crime fell road by road, and it is worth checking the exact street and the nearest car park against it.

What happens after a report is a separate matter, and it is decided across the whole of London. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year from June 2025 to May 2026. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That answers whether someone gets caught, and it is a force-wide figure that says nothing about how often Bexley needs to ring in the first place.

Safety is one of Bexley's real strengths. The crime that happens here is mostly aimed at cars and homes, and there is a good deal less of it than anywhere else in the borough bearing the same name.
