Is Ashford, Surrey a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Ashford, Surrey.

Ashford is about as safe as the rest of its borough, and a touch safer. Its crime rate is a little below Spelthorne's. The mix of offences looks like the national one. The police charge someone in roughly one case in ten. This is an ordinary suburb with ordinary numbers, and the ordinary is the good news.

Police recorded about 3,200 crimes in Ashford in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 88 per 1,000 residents. That puts Ashford roughly 3% below the Spelthorne average. A gap that size could close with a few busy months, so Ashford is best seen as level with the borough, sitting at the lower edge of it.

Spelthorne as a whole runs at about 91 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Ashford's 88. Two numbers that close describe one borough with one crime profile, and Ashford is a typical part of it.

The texture of the town is suburban and busy. Ashford packs in about 5,900 people per square kilometre, unemployment stood at about 3% at the last census, and about 5% of households were overcrowded. That is a dense, working suburb on the Heathrow side of Surrey, with few of the pressures that usually come with high crime figures.

The mix of crime follows the national pattern closely. Violence and sexual offences make up about 36% of Ashford's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales, and that category takes in everything from serious assault to common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 15%, against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson and shoplifting run at about 9% each, against 7% and 8%. Public order offences make up about 8% and other theft about 6%, against 7% for each nationally. Every category lands within two points of the national figure, which makes Ashford's crime report about as unremarkable as police data gets. The most notorious crime in the town's history is more than a century old: in 1921 the Irish Republican Army murdered a British spy, Vincent Fovargue, on Ashford Manor golf course. The fairways have been the scene of nothing worse than a bad round since.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and one for the force. Surrey Police charged a suspect in about 11% of crimes in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, ranking 30th of 42 forces. About 36% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. Those figures cover the whole of Surrey, so they say how a crime is likely to be handled once it happens and nothing about how often one happens in Ashford. For a feel of a particular street, the police's street-level crime map for the exact postcode will show more than any town figure can.

Ashford's safety is middling in the plainest sense. It has an average borough's crime, an average country's crime mix and an average force's charge rate, and nothing in it should put a buyer off.
